Nestled quietly in the Upper Garden District, only two blocks away from all the hustle and bustle of Magazine Street, is a true New Orleans experience just waiting to happen. Cafe' Atchafalaya sits, beckoning you to dine with us. Chef Rolita Goodrich serves both our traditional Creole, southern and soul food dishes as well as eclectic, creative variations of the old and time-honored favorites.

Café Atchafalaya began nearly 20 years ago as Petrosi’s, an oyster bar and restaurant. You can feel the history when you enter the café. The location has always been a favorite establishment of the Irish Channel neighborhood. Shortly before Hurricane Katrina, the restaurant was purchased by Tim Howard, who changed the café from its humble surroundings as an oyster bar to a beautifully and artfully designed restaurant, perfect for Sunday Brunch with the family, romantic dinners, or parties or meetings in our private dining room. The ambiance of the café is warm and glowing; the atmosphere enhanced by shades of warm, subdued yellows and amber, and soft candle light illuminates the original cypress exposed woodwork. There is a welcoming wait staff which is ready to make your dining experience an enjoyable one.

Cafe' Atchafalaya (a-chah-fah-lie-yah) was named after the Atchafalaya Basin, the largest swamp in the United States, that is a combination of wetlands and river delta area that cuts through the heart of Cajun Country and completes its journey at the Gulf of Mexico. It contains bayous, swamps, and marshlands rich with the diversity that Louisiana is known for. The name is derived from the root hacha falaia, Choctaw for "Long River." The Atchafalaya Basin is unique among basins because it has a growing delta system with nearly stable wetlands.

Our belief at Cafe Atchafalaya is the same as that of the swamp – diversity. Our customers are as diverse as the Atchafalaya Basin for which we are named. We know you will enjoy the variety in our dishes and our prices and invite you to come and dine with us.
